Phillip Becker

Mr. Becker was a serious music teacher who did not tolerate nonsense from his students. He served in the Marine Corps in World War II and participated in some of the worst south Pacific island invasions. His experiences in the war may have limited his patience under stress. He commanded absolute attention from his students when his class was in session.

He would always stop and talk to one of the Marines he served with, Jerry Walker, when they met on the street. Jerry walked with a pronounced limp as a result of being wounded in a war campaign he and Mr. Becker endured together. In spite of his noticeable disability, Jerry delivered mail on his door-to-door route, all on foot. Mr. Becker and Jerry appeared to share a bond that that must have been much deeper than their casual conversations revealed. Jerry lived in Oroville until he died in the early 2000s.

Mr. Becker died of a heart attack in the mid-sixties while conducting a band class.
